Honorary Alderman of the Borough

The Council is asked to admit as an Honorary Alderman of the Borough, the following individual, being a person of distinction and being considered to have rendered eminent service to the Borough of Telford & Wrekin.

 

Mr Robert James Sloan

 

Section 249 of the Local Government Act, 1972 provides that a Council may pass a resolution to admit an honorary alderman providing that not less than two-thirds of Members voting thereon at a meeting of the Council specifically convened for this purpose vote in support.

 

RECOMMENDED – that the nominated individual be admitted as an Honorary Alderman of the Borough of Telford & Wrekin.

 

Minutes:

This Special Meeting of the Council had been convened for the purpose of presenting the honour of Alderman of the Borough to the following former Councillor:

 

Mr Robert James Sloan

 

who had given many years of eminent service to the Borough and the community.

 

The Honorary Alderman of the Borough nomination was proposed by Councillor S Davies, seconded by Councillor A J Eade and supported by Councillor W L Tomlinson.

 

Upon being put to the vote, it was:

 

RESOLVED – that Mr Robert James Sloan be admitted as an Honorary Alderman of the Borough of Telford & Wrekin.

Honorary Freeman of the Borough

The Council is being asked to admit the following, being of distinction and considered to have rendered eminent service to Telford & Wrekin, as an Honorary Freeman of the Borough:

 

Mr Liam Davies

 

Section 249 of the Local Government Act, 1972 provides that a Council may pass a resolution to admit an honorary freeman providing that not less than two-thirds of Members voting thereon at a meeting of the Council specifically convened for this purpose vote in support.

 

Mrs Iris Butler and Mr Richie Woodhall were admitted as Freeman of the Borough in 2002, Mr Lee Carter in 2005, Mrs Elizabeth Holt in 2008, Mr Peter Gibbons in 2009, The Rifles in 2010, Mr George Whyle in 2011, Mr Ricky Furgusson in 2012, Mr Mickey Bushell in 2014, Mr Alan Olver in 2015, Mr John Gill in 2017, Ms Mandie Mulloy and Telford Crisis Support in 2022.

 

RECOMMENDED – that the nominated individual be admitted as an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Telford & Wrekin.

 

Minutes:

This Special Meeting of the Council had been convened for the purpose  of presenting the Honorary Freedom of the Borough to:

 

Mr Liam Davies.

 

Councillor S Davies, Leader of the Council, proposed Mr Davies as an Honorary Freeman of the Borough in recognition of his sporting achievements. Mr Davies was a professional boxer and the current British and European Super Champion.  Mr Davies had won his most recent title at the Telford International Centre, echoing the achievements of another Freeman of the Borough, Mr Richie Woodall. Mr Davies had trained at Donnington Boxing Club and had previously worked for Veolia. Mr Davies was an inspiration to every young person in the Borough.

 

Councillor R A Overton formally seconded the nomination. Mr Davies was an inspiration and showed the power of hard work and dedication. Mr Davies was a true role model and he made the whole of the Borough proud.

 

In supporting the nomination, Councillor A J Eade stated that Mr Davies had achieved much in his career and would achieve even more. He noted that Mr Davies had raised thousands of pounds for charities in Telford, including raising money for Christmas presents for local children. Mr Davies was a role model for children.

 

Councillor W L Tomlinson, in supporting the nomination, said that Mr Davies had bought honour to the Borough.

 

RESOLVED – that Mr Liam Davies be admitted as an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Telford & Wrekin.

 

Mr Liam Davies thanked the Council for this honour and stated that he was proud to represent his home town.
